CALDWELL UPENDS SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT AT NCAA BASEBALL REGIONAL

RINDGE, N.H.--A solo home run in the top of the sixth by freshman Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/Monroe) broke a 2-2 tie and sparked the Caldwell College baseball team to a 3-2 victory over 26th-ranked Southern Connecticut State University in the first round of the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament Thursday night at Pappas Field. The win means the fourth-seeded Cougars (33-17) advance through the winner's bracket to face Dowling College on Friday, May 16. The third-seeded Owls (36-18) will play top-seeded Franklin Pierce University.

Southern Connecticut struck for the first runs of the game in the bottom of the third, when Anthony Fiorillo singled home Karl Derbacher and Mo Davidson to put the Owls on top 2-0. The Cougars pulled even in the top of the fifth. After Caldwell loaded the bases on three straight singles, sophomore Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) hit an infield single to third that scored sophomore Jon Irwin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac). An error on the play also allowed senior Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) to come home, tying the game at 2-2. Then in the top of the sixth, Molina blasted a two-out, solo home run to left-centerfield that gave the Cougars a 3-2 advantage.

After allowing two runs in the third and getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, Caldwell starter Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Acad.) settled in, holding the Owls to a hit and a walk over the next four innings. Pfeil pitched eight innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out eight and walking five. Murphy took the mound in the ninth and surrendered a single but struck out two batters, including Derbacher, the Northeast-10 Player of the Year, to end the game. The Owls' Jim Fuller fanned 13 batters in seven innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits.

The Cougars advance to the next round on Friday, May 16, to play fifth-seeded Dowling College, which upended second-seeded Bryant 7-6 earlier today. The first pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. at Pappas Field.
