CALDWELL'S MURPHY SIGNS WITH NEW JERSEY JACKALS

CALDWELL, NJ--Former Caldwell College baseball standout Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) has signed a professional contract to play for the New Jersey Jackals of the independent Can-Am League. Murphy, who graduated from Caldwell this past May after a stellar career for the Cougars, will be in uniform for the first time tonight when the Jackals take on the Worcester Tornadoes in Worcester, Mass.

"I'm excited to get to keep playing baseball after college, and I'm looking forward to continuing my baseball career and seeing where it takes me," said Murphy, who was signed after a workout session Thursday. He expects to play a utility role as an infielder initially before eventually getting an opportunity to pitch.

Murphy made the ECAC All-Star team as a utility player after earning ABCA/Rawlings all-Northeast Region second team and all-CACC first team honors this spring. He led the Cougars in batting with a .394 average while recording nine doubles, 31 runs, three homers and 18 RBIs despite missing 11 games due to injury. In four games at the NCAA Northeast Region Tournament, Murphy batted .529 (9-for-17) with a double, a triple and a home run. On the mound, the hard-throwing Murphy went 2-1 with an earned-run average of 3.14 while striking out 36 batters in 28 2/3 innings. For his career, the two-time all-CACC first team honoree recorded 139 hits in 396 at-bats for a career batting average of .351. He also went 13-7 on the mound with a 4.52 earned-run average in 151 1/3 innings pitched in his career.

The Jackals play in Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J. The Can-Am League consists of teams in Montclair, Sussex and Atlantic City, N.J., Worcester and Brockton, Mass., Nashua, N.H., Ottawa, Ontario and Quebec City, Quebec.
