NEW CASTLE, Del. (May 6, 2010) – Dominican College and Post University have moved into the winners bracket of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Tournament with victories today at Wilson Field in New Castle, Del. The Chargers and Eagles will meet Friday at 3:00 pm for the right to play for the conference championship.
Dominican, the second seed for the tournament, defeated No. 3 Felician College 3-2 behind a complete game from sophomore right-hander David Bartuska. Post upset top seeded Wilmington University, 4-2, after a ninth-inning rally.
Bartuska improved to 7-1 this season by allowing only six hits and two runs while striking out eight Felician batters. He improved to 7-1 this season with the win.
The Chargers scored the winning run with an unusual sacrifice fly to shortstop in the sixth inning. Xavier Bonilla hit a flair toward left field and Felician shortstop Alex Del Valle had to dive to catch the ball while falling into left field. The diving catch allowed Willie Mann to race home to give Dominican a 3-2 edge. Mann finished the day 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Dominican (26-15) started the game strong by plating two runs in the first inning on a Tony Blake RBI double and a Mann single. Felician (26-23) answered in the fourth with a pair of runs. Mickey Zudonyi advanced home on a successful double steal and a Jeff Calabrese provided the other run with an infield single.
Wilmington controlled the majority of the game against Post until the Eagles mounted a huge rally in the ninth inning to steal the victory. The Eagles went into the top of the ninth trailing 2-0, having been unable to cross the plate against CACC Pitcher of the Year, Joe Harris.
Ralph Dieguez led-off the inning with a walk and Jared Maddox came in to pinch run. Maddox moved to second on a wild pitch and the advanced to third on an Alex Jahn single. Russ Sirko then walked to load the bases before Jose Reyes bunted to plate Maddox, making it 2-1. That finally chased Harris out of the game, as senior JT Gregory entered to try to nail down the win. However, Post’s Todd Blair reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Jahn to tie the game with one out. Dan Luisi then walked to set up Brendan Barry, who hit a two-run single to centerfield securing a 4-2 Eagle lead.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, junior Dan Steers struck out two batters to finish his complete game, improving to 8-3 this season. He allowed two unearned runs and seven hits while fanning six. Barry went 4-for-5 with two RBI, while Reyes went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
