FELICIAN SWEEPS FIRST CACC BASEBALL WEEKLY AWARDS OF SEASON
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Felician College has swept the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Awards of the 2010 season, it was announced Monday. Mickey Zudonyi was named Player of the Week, Pitcher of the Week went to Phil Messerian and Joe Petosa was chosen Rookie of the Week.
Zudonyi, a 5-9 junior infielder, hit .380 in 12 games with 12 runs scored, five RBI, three doubles, one triple and six stolen bases last week. He collected multiple hits in seven games, including a 3-for-4 performance with one run and one run batted in against USP. Went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI vs. St. Rose.
Messerian, a 6-2 senior right-hander from Fair Lawn, NJ, is 3-1 thus far in 2010 with a 3.38 ERA. He is riding a streak of 14 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings. He tossed a 5-hit shutout vs. C.W. Post with one walk and five strikeouts and allowed one run in six innings against Philadelphia.
Petosa, a 5-10 freshman outfielder from Spotswood, NJ, hit .341, drove in 12 runs, scored seven times and hit one home run in his first collegiate action. He homered in his third game against Lander and drove in two runs against Lander, Philadelphia and USP. He collected three hits against STAC.
AJ Boardman, Caldwell (So., RHP, 6-0, Sunnyside, NY) - Allowed one run in six innings with eight strikeouts in a victory over Mercyhurst.
Jose Padilla, Dominican (Jr. OF, 5-7, Bergenfield, NJ) - Hit .438 in five games last week, scoring five times with three 2B.
Shaun Murphy, Dominican (Gr., LHP, 5-9, Malville, NY) - In 7.0 IP vs. St. Rose, allowed five hits and one run.
Jorge Ynoa, Caldwell (So., OF, Bayside, NY) - Hit .455 in three games vs. Mercyhurst, driving in three runs.
Caldwell - The Cougars opened the 2010 season this past weekend with three games against Mercyhurst at Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J. The teams split Saturday’s doubleheader, with Caldwell scoring six runs in the seventh inning of Game 1 to win 6-4. Senior catcher Miguel Perdomo blasted a grand slam in the inning to lift the Cougars to victory. Mercyhurst won the second game on Saturday, 4-3. On Sunday, sophomore Jorge Ynoa’s two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored senior Andrew Robertson from second base for a 5-4 victory. Ynoa had three hits in the win. Caldwell heads to Florida for nine games, beginning on Saturday, Mar. 13 against 15th-ranked Franklin Pierce.
Felician - Senior C Marcos Torres has become the fourth player in program history to reach 100 career RBI (currently 108). Felician has won its last five games to reach the .500 mark after a 1-6 start.
