TOP SEEDS DOMINICAN AND WILMINGTON NOTCH DOMINANT WINS AT CACC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

NEW CASTLE, Del. (May 12, 2011) – Top seeds Dominican College and Wilmington University recorded dominating wins Thursday in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Tournament at Wilmington’s Wilson Field. No. 1 Dominican defeated No. 5 University of the Sciences, 7-0, while No. 2 Wilmington upended No. 3 Post University, 9-0. The Chargers and Wildcats will meet Friday at 3:00 pm for the right to play for the CACC Championship on Saturday. Friday will start with an elimination game between Post and USciences at noon at Frawley Stadium.

Dominican (27-15) was led by first team All-CACC starting pitcher David Bartuska, who hurled eight innings of shutout ball. He scattered four hits and fanned seven. The Chargers scored single runs in each of the first three innings. Lead-off hitter Michael Levy opened the game with a triple and scored on a groundout to give DC a quick 1-0 lead. Senior catcher Robert Iglesias delivered an RBI single in the second and Christopher Gonzalez drove in a run with a groundout in the third.

DC tacked on three more runs in the eighth inning as first basemen Tyler Clark hit a two-run triple to right center field and Levy followed with an RBI single for the final 7-0 victory. The Devils fell to 14-21 with the loss.

CACC Pitcher of the Year Joe Harris controlled the action in Wilmington’s win over Post, allowing only three hits in 8.0 innings of work to go with eight strikeouts and no walks to improve to 8-2 this season.

The top four batters in the WU line-up did most of the damage, combining to go 8-for-19 with seven RBI and four runs scored. CACC Player of the Year Mike Godwin went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while lead-off hitter Joe Harbach went 2-for-4 with one run and three RBI.

The Wildcats broke the game open with five runs on three hits in a wild eighth inning. The Wildcats took advantage of a Post error, a wild pitch and a hit batter in the inning. Harbach provided a 2-run single to start the scoring, while Jordan Oncay added a 2-run double. Wilmington is now 35-10 on the season, while Post falls to 23-17.
