DiFRANCESCO, BRUCE AND GALLUB CLAIM BASEBALL WEEKLY HONORS

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Anthony DiFrancesco of Philadelphia University has claimed Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Player of the Week honors for March 28. Kurt Bruce of Wilmington University was tabbed Pitcher of the Week, while Concordia College's Joe Gallub was the pick for Rookie of the Week.

DiFrancesco, a 6-1 junior 3B from Landenberg, Pa., hit the game-winning homer in the top of the ninth in a 6-5 game 1 win over Bloomfield Saturday. He went 3-for-4 in that game with two runs, a double, and one stolen base. He hit .625 in the DH with a .700 on-base and 1.375 slugging percentage. He followed with a 2-for-4 effort with a pair of doubles in game 2.

Bruce, a 6-0 right-hander from Lusby, Md., threw a 9-inning complete game shutout against Nyack. He allowed only four hits with five strikeouts and two walks in the 5-0 victory. 

Gallub, a 6-2 freshman OF from Oceanside, N.Y., earned a .375 average in a double-header against Felician with two doubles, one run scored and one RBI. He went 2-for-4 with one run, one RBI and one double in a 9-7 victory in game 2. 

Honorable Mention

John Arche, Felician (So., SS, 6-2, Miami, FL) - Collected three hits in each of Felician’s three games last week in recording a .643 batting average and .667 on-base percentage. Stole three bases, scored three runs and posted one RBI.

Mike Godwin, Wilmington (Jr., C, 6-1, Hockessin, DE) - Hit .434 in a 3-1 week with five RBI, two runs scored and two doubles.    

Andrew Camardella, Dominican (So., 1B, 6-2, Pelham, NY) - Hit .364 in a 3-0 week with three RBI and one run scored.

Dustin Javins, Dominican (Jr., RHP, Fort Lauderdale, FL)  - Went 7.0 innings and scattered three hits with five K’s and two walks in a 6-2 win over USciences. Allowed just one unearned run.

CACC Notes

Bloomfield - The Deacons moved to 2-2 in CACC play this week, splitting a home doubleheader with Philadelphia University Saturday afternoon.  Senior righty Steve Godowski was outstanding in seven innings of work in Game Two, totaling seven innings of work while striking out five and scattering eight hits in a no-decision.  Luis Buron registered his first Bloomfield College home run in Game One, and followed it with a 2-3 Game Two effort to help key the victory. Jason Luzzi was the hero in the Game Two win, notching a walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Deacons the split.  Alex Sepulveda finished Game One going 2-4 with an RBI, and Mike Monaco continued the strong offensive output behind the plate with a 2-3 effort in Game Two.  Freshman center fielder Joe Meola totaled three hits in the victory, going 3-5 with a pair of RBIs.

Felician - Sophomore SS Jon Arche had three hits in each game of Felician’s 1-2 week, raising his season batting average from .196 to .292.

Philadelphia - The Philadelphia University baseball team (2-12, 1-3 CACC) exchanged a 6-5 win and a 6-5 loss in a double header on the road at Bloomfield College last week. The score for game one would be settled in the top of the ninth as senior Anthony DiFrancesco sent one deep to raise the score 6-5. Three quick outs in the ninth gave PhilaU the win. On the mound, senior Kevin McGovern earned the win in game one while sophomore Russell Trojan took game two’s loss. The team’s next contest brings them home to face East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday (3/29).

USciences - The Devils lost their only two games of the week, as Dominican swept a conference doubleheader. The doubleheader with Wilmington is being made up on Monday, March 28, 2011. Senior Mark Perry (Toms River,, N.J.)  moved into fifth place on the Devils all-time hit list, getting two on Saturday to give him 125 for his career. Junior Luke Peyton (Haddonfield, N.J.), who recently recorded his 100th career strikeout, moved into seventh place on the Devils all-time list with 108 for his career.
