NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Jesse Daywalt of Chestnut Hill College has claimed Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Player of the Week honors on April 4. Dave Bartuska of Dominican College was selected Pitcher of the Week, while Jamie Treml of Wilmington University earned Rookie of the Week status.
Daywalt, a 5-8 junior 2B from Phoenixville, Pa., hit .500 (9-for-18) in a 3-1 week with seven runs scored and five runs batted in. He collected two doubles and two triples and had three hits against both Caldwell and Concordia. He went 3-for-4 with three runs and two triples in a 7-4 win over Caldwell and had a 3-for-5 effort with three RBI in his next outing against Concordia.
Bartuska, a 6-0 right-hander from Duryea, Pa., went 8.2 innings and did not allow a run in a tight 1-0 win over Concordia. He scattered seven hits and walked one with eight strikeouts.
Treml, a 6-0 lefty from Bear, Del., went 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in two appearances last week. In a start at USciences, allowed only four hits and one run in 7.0 IP with six strikeouts.
Anthony DiFrancesco, Philadelphia (Jr., 3B, Landenberg, Pa.) - Despite a 1-5 week, hit .464 with 10 RBI, eight runs scored, five doubles and one triple.
Dan McMahon, USci (So., RHP, Millville, NJ) - Struck out 12 batters and allowed only 1 ER in 8.0 IP in a win over Bloomfield.
Mike Godwin, Wilmington (Jr., C, 6-1, Hockessin, DE) - Hit .421 with seven runs scored, four RBI and four doubles in a 4-1 week.
Craig Gourley, Caldwell (Jr., RHP, P. Pleasant Beach, NJ) - Went 1-1 with a 0.69 ERA in two starts. Allowed only one run in 13.0 IP with 18 K’s. Allowed only two hits in 7.0 innings of work vs. Nyack.
Kyle Davis, USci (So., SS, Garnet Valley, PA) - Hit .552 with seven runs, two RBI and two stolen bases. Went 7-7 in a DH vs. Wilmington.
Brendan Barry, Post (Sr., 3B, Franklin Square, NY) - Hit .571 with three RBI and two runs scored in a DH split with Wilmington.
Bloomfield - The Deacons moved to 4-4 in CACC
play this week, sweeping Caldwell Tuesday and dropping a pair of
games against the USciences on Saturday. In the opener against
Caldwell, junior righty Luis Mendoza tossed six
innings, while striking out five Cougar hitters and surrendering a
single unearned run. Luis Buron finished the game
2-3 with an RBI, driving what would prove to be the game-winning
run in a 2-1 affair. In the second game, junior lefty Eric
Kamp yielded a single run over seven innings to improve to
3-1 on the season, while junior outfielder Jason
Luzzi smashed his first home run as a Deacon in a 4-1
victory. In the weekend series against USCI, senior righty
Steve Godowski went eight innings surrendering two
earned runs in the 3-2 loss in game one, while Rafael
Medina smashed his first home run of the season.
Caldwell - The Cougars went 3-3 in CACC games last week, sweeping Nyack, splitting with Chestnut Hill and losing twice at Bloomfield. Sophomore Adolfo Lopez batted .500 (12-for-24) for the week with four doubles, three runs and three RBI, including a 5-for-6 game against Nyack on Saturday. Cougar pitchers struck out 60 batters in 69.0 innings pitched last week, including 18 in 13.0 innings by junior Craig Gourley, who blanked Nyack on two hits over seven innings while fanning nine. Caldwell plays CACC doubleheaders at Concordia on Monday and home against Post on Wednesday and USciences on Saturday.
Chestnut Hill - Chestnut Hill currently ranks sixth in DII for stolen bases-per-game (2.75), which ranks first in the CACC this season.
Felician - Felician went 3-0 last week, with all three wins coming in extra innings. It is believed to be the first time in the 11-year history of the program that the Golden Falcons have won, or even played in, three consecutive extra-inning contests. Freshman OF Chris Faber (bases-loaded walk), freshman OF Collin Martindale (single) and junior IF Casey Phillips (triple) provided the winning RBI on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday, respectively, as Felician swept Nyack and won a non-league game over Dominican.
Philadelphia - The Rams picked up their third win this season, a 6-4 road victory at USciences. This week the team faces Wilmington and Concordia in CACC play.
USciences - The Devils recorded their second CACC doubleheader sweep of the season on Saturday, with two wins over Bloomfield. USciences now has four CACC wins, one more than they had in the 2009 and 2010 seasons combined and three more than last season. Leadoff batter Nick Szalejko (Norristown, Pa.) was hit by a pitch six times in the Devils seven games this week, giving him 13 on the season and breaking the Devils single season record of 12 set back in 2000 by Brian Greene. Kyle Davis (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and Szalejko hit safely in every game this week, extending their hitting streaks to nine games. Szalejko also moved into fifth place on the Devils all-time list for getting hit by pitches with 20. With three doubles this week, Mark Perry (Toms River, N.J.) moved into a tie for second place on the Devils all-time doubles list with 30. Pitcher Luke Peyton (Haddonfield, N.J.) moved into fifth place on the Devils strikeout list, fanning 14 this week in 11 innings of work to give him 124 for his career.
