NEW HAVEN, Conn. (June 12, 2018) -- Felician University standout Matt Diesel was recently named to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team, as announced by the national organization of sports information directors. It marks the fourth All-America squad that Diesel has been named to this season, as he also earned All-America honors for his stellar play on the diamond from D2CCA, ABCA and NCBWA.
To be eligible for the Academic All-America Team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore both athletically and academically. They must also own a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at their current institution, and be a starter or important reserve on their team. They must also have been placed on the Google Cloud Academic All-District Team for consideration for the national squad.
Diesel, a senior, sports a 3.71 GPA in his major of accounting. He had an award-winning senior season, as he was named the 2018 CACC Player of the Year, while also becoming the consensus East Region Player of the Year by winning the honor from all three organizations listed above.
He led the league in batting this season with a .435 clip. Diesel also drove in a league-best 65 runs to help guide the Golden Falcons to the CACC South Division Championship, the No. 1 overall seed in the CACC Tournament and a berth in the conference championship final. He also paced the conference in hits (87) and doubles (25). His on-base (.500) and slugging percentages (.700) were second highest in the CACC.
Diesel helped lead Felician to the CACC South Division Regular Season Championship and a berth in the CACC Championship Final. It marked the third-consecutive season he helped guide the Golden Falcons to some form of a conference championship (2016 CACC Championship & 2017 CACC Regular Season Championship).
