BLOOMFIELD'S DAYE SELECTED CACC MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (March 1, 2010) - Gage Daye of Bloomfield College has been selected the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Basketball Player of the Year in balloting released today. The 13 CACC head coaches conducted the voting. Daye leads the conference in scoring with 26.0 points per-game and steals with 2.74 per-contest. Rookie of the Year accolades went to Leon Porter of Dominican College, while Herb Magee of Philadelphia University was chosen Coach of the Year. The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia was given the annual Team Sportsmanship Award.
Daye, a 6-2 junior guard from Newark, NJ, has been a scoring
machine for the Deacons this
season and ranks second in the country in scoring. However, Daye
also hands out 4.6 assists and pulls down 6.3 rebounds per-game,
and ranks seventh nationally in steals. He ranks second in the CACC
in assists. Daye converts 2.00 three-pointers per-outing, which is
tied for the fifth-most in the conference. Daye provided the most
points by any player in the East Region this season with a 41-point
outburst against Post on Feb. 17. He also notched the region's only
triple-double of the campaign with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 11
assists against Post on Jan. 26. Daye and the Deacons will be the
top seed for the upcoming CACC Tournament. Daye was a first-team
All-Conference pick last season.
Porter, a 5-6 point guard who hails from Laurel, MD, has been one of the main reasons the Chargers claimed the No. 3 seed in the North Division in the CACC Tournament. Porter leads the conference in assists (5.41), ranks 12th in scoring (14.6), sixth in assist:turnover ratio (1.44), sixth in free-throw percentage (.786), fifth in three-pointers made per-game (2.00) and 14th in three-point field-goal percentage (.358).
Magee has provided one of the most compelling national storylines of the season during his journey to become the all-time wins leader in NCAA history. He passed the previous record-holder, the legendary Bobby Knight, on Tuesday, Feb. 23 with a victory over Goldey-Beacom College, notching his 903rd win. The Rams are currently ranked third in the East Region with a 24-6 record. The squad won the South Division regular-season championship with a 16-1 finish.
In addition to Daye, three of the All-CACC first team honorees are repeat selections in the Philadelphia senior duo of Malcolm Ingram and Russell Frederick, along with Goldey-Beacom senior guard Kyle White. Holy Family University sophomore forward Justin Swidowski was named to the first team after earning second team distinction last season. Furthermore, Swidowski was the 2008-09 CACC Rookie of the Year.
Second team picks include two players from Felician College in junior guard/forward Devon Young and sophomore guard Antoine Obery. Young was a second team pick last year and was the CACC Rookie of the Year in 2007-08. Other second team picks were William Eason of Concordia College, who led the conference in rebounding this season, and Goldey-Beacom junior Terrence Parkes. USP's Adewale Adefemi was named to the second team for the second consecutive season.
The third team is composed of two players from both Post University and Nyack College. The Post picks are graduate student Jon Lucky and freshman forward Trevon Hamlet. Nyack is represented by junior forward James Oyamo and senior guard Jose Lopez. Rookie of the Year Porter also made the third team, along with Wilmington University sophomore Brandon Savage.
