WILMINGTON'S SIMMONS CHOSEN CACC JANUARY STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
NEW HAVEN, CT (February 5, 2010) - Amelia Simmons of Wilmington University has been chosen the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) January Student-Athlete of the Month, according to an announced by CACC Commissioner Dan Mara. Simmons is in her final season as a member of the Wildcat women's basketball team.
Simmons, who recently graduated with a Behavioral Science
degree, hails from Wilmington,
DE. Simmons is not only a standout on the court and in the
classroom, she is committed to improving her community and is
involved in numerous service initiatives.
Simmons has taken part in two Breast Cancer Walks to help raise money for the fight against the disease and is a five-time participant in the Light the Night/Lymphoma Leukemia Society walk. Simmons is an active member of the Wilmington Student-Athlete Advisory Committee with various activities like the Make-A-Wish Foundation fundraiser, Toys for Tots program and the Wilmington Silent Auction. Since high school, Simmons has volunteered at the Wilmington YMCA and assisted with after school programs and summer camps and clinics. In addition, she has served as a mentor at the Douglas Alternative School, mentoring students by playing basketball with them, helping with homework and talking with them about life skills.
Simmons is a six-time member of the Dean's List at Wilmington University and graduated on January 31 with a 3.54 grade-point average. She earned a spot on the 2008-09 CACC Winter All-Academic team and is a member of the Wilmington Delta Epsilon Rho Honor Society.
Simmons is one of the most prolific players in Wilmington basketball history and recently became the program's all-time leading scorer. She currently has 2,080 career points and is five rebounds shy of 1,000. She paces the CACC in both scoring (22.2 points per-game) and rebounding (10.3 rebounds per-game), while standing fifth in field-goal percentage (.505) and 10th in free-throw percentage (.786). She was named the CACC Rookie of the Year in 2007 and followed with first team All-Conference recognition as a sophomore and junior. She was named second team All-Region the last two seasons and helped lead the Wildcats to the 2008-09 CACC Tournament championship game. For her efforts, she was selected to the All-Tournament team.
