HOLY FAMILY CLAIMS SECOND STRAIGHT CACC WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

October 13, 2007

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Top-seeded Holy Family University won its second consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Tennis Championship with a 5-0 victory over No. 2 Philadelphia University today at Philadelphia's Main Campus Courts. With the victory, Holy Family has been awarded the CACC's automatic berth into the 2007-08 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships.

Holy Family started strong and swept the doubles competition to jump ahead, 3-0. The Tiger No. 1 team of sophomores Quena Borres and Shakir Willett upended senior Maddie Smith and freshman Adriana Rodriguez, 8-4, while the No. 2 team of sophomore Lianna Lui and senior Lauren Neill defeated freshman Daniela Rodriguez and sophomore Christina Kettle, 8-2. The sweep was completed by sophomore Melanie Pulsinelli and freshman Ashley Berge at No. 3 doubles with their 8-5 victory over junior Amanda Brennan and senior Katie Stracquatanio.

Needing just two victories in singles, Pulsinelli and Berge came through with victories within seconds of each other at No. 5 and 6, thus ending the competition at 5-0. Due to conference rules, once a team reaches five points, all other matches must be suspended. Pulsinelli got past Kettle at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-3, while Berge defeated Brennan, 6-2, 6-2.

The women's tennis season will conclude next weekend on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19 and 20, at the CACC Individual Championships. The tournament will be hosted by Chestnut Hill College at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School. The action will begin at 9:00 am both days.
