He had spent a combined 21 years as a campus sports information director at two conference institutions. He came to the CACC office after two years as the communications specialist for Waterbury (Conn.) Public Schools.Ā Mentone was the first full-time SID at Felician University, where he worked from 2006 to 2022. He gave Felician its first athletics social media presence and assisted the Golden Falcons in establishing their first "dot-com" website, eventually overseeing four redesigns. While in Rutherford, Mentone created Felician's sport record books, overhauled its athletics archives, and helped start its video streaming service. He also spent two years, January 2016 to December 2017, as the chair of the CACC Sports Information Directors' Committee. Mentone was the initial chair of the Felician Athletics Hall of Fame Committee and administered all aspects of the Golden Falcons' first seven annual Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremonies, from 2013 to 2019. Felician's first six NCAA All-America performers and its first 14 Academic All-AmericansĀ® were named under his watch. In February 2021, he was presented the College Sports Information Directors of America 25-Year Award. From 2000 to 2005, Mentone was the coordinator of sports information services at New Jersey Institute of Technology. While employed by NJIT, he served four years as the part-time information director for the CACC. For his work in both positions, he won a regional 2005 Grant Burger Media Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Mentone performed two stints as an assistant SID at Southern Connecticut State University. Working under future CoSIDA Hall-of-Famer Rick Leddy from 1997 to 2000, he was the principal media contact for the Owls' back-to-back Division-II national championship men's soccer teams in 1998 and 1999. While at SCSU, Mentone was also the final information director for the D-II incarnation of the New England Collegiate Conference. He returned to Leddy's office for most of 2005-06. Mentone began his career in athletics communications as an intern at Hartwick College for the 1996-97 academic year. Mentone owns a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from Trinity (Conn.) College (1996) and an M.S. in journalism from Quinnipiac University (2010). He spent 12 years as a certified high-school baseball umpire in Connecticut and New Jersey. An avid bowler as a teenager, he was a 22-time champion on the Junior Bowlers Tour. Mentone is a native and current resident of Hamden, Conn., and a graduate of Hamden High School.
