WILMINGTON, Del. (May 14, 2025) -- It came down to a third set tiebreaker on the final court and it was No. 2 Queens that edged the No. 3 Wilmington University women's tennis team, 4-3, in the NCAA Division II East Region 2 Bracket on Tuesday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
Playing for a spot in the NCAA Division II National Tournament in Altamonte Springs, Florida, the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds played up to the hype, playing tight battles in the doubles and singles matchups. The entire match took over four hours to finish.
Queens took the doubles point, starting with a win at No. 3, 6-4. The No. 1 and No.2 doubles were tied, 5-5, but the Knights took back-to-back games at No. 2 doubles to win the match, 7-5, and the doubles points.
The Wildcats evened the score at No. 6 singles, as senior Kushi Khandoji won in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2. The Knights took a 2-1 lead with a win at No. 4 singles, but Molly Carlberg answered right back with a straight set win at No. 3, 6-3 and 6-2, to tie the match, 2-2.
Ming-fu Chen brought the Wildcats to within one win of the match, taking a three-setter at No. 5 singles. She won, 6-4, 0-6, and 6-4, to make it a 3-2 match.
Siana MacDonald fought back to win the second set, 7-6 (8-6), to force a third set at No. 2 singles, but Eva Rivoal answered with a 6-1 third set to tie the match, 3-3.
Liza Sylka took the first set at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (7-3), to begin a long match with Maja Makal. Makal came back and won the second set, 6-3, setting up a close finish. Trailing 3-2, Sylka won the next three games to take a 5-3 lead and was holding onto two match points but couldn't convert. Makal battled saved the two match points and then took the next three games to take a 6-5 lead. Sylka saved her serve though to send the match into a tiebreaker.
Liza Sylka took the first two points before Makal eventually tied it at 3-3. Makal then buckled down and took the next four points to win the match, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), and send the Knights into a frenzy.
Kushi Khandoji finished her senior season 17-4 in singles matches, including 4-0 at No. 3 singles and 4-0 at No. 4 singles. She also went 8-2 in doubles matches this season, including 7-0 at No. 3 doubles.
